Philani Sangweni

He has 15 years’ experience in management consulting, entrepreneurship and executive leadership roles across Africa and globally. He has worked in financial services, mining, consumer goods, telecoms, energy,  and transport sectors.

He is CEO of AKRO Accelerate, which is the only pre seed stage accelerator that is backed by the SA SME Fund where the focus is to build a strong pipeline of tech start-ups for the local VC community. He is also co-founder CEO of Matsei Technologies and Consulting, which works with blue chip clients on C-Level topic such as strategy development and execution, supply chain and operations transformation, as well as digital transformation. He was COO at Fundi Capital and was a Senior Manager at Accenture Strategy.

Philani stays in Johannesburg with his wife – who is a chef – and two sons.


Bas Hochstenbach

Originally from the Netherlands, Bas obtained a double Masters (Commercial Law, Public Administration) from Leiden University and worked at consultancy McKinsey & Company. 

He moved to the African continent in 2004 and co-founded eco-tourism company Asilia Africa (www.asiliaafrica.com). The company grew to significant size and won various awards for “Best Business” and “Best community / conservation models”. In 2016, Bas left his full-time position at Asilia and started to get involved with early stage ventures in South Africa. Bas mentors entrepreneurs, assists hands-on with strategy development and early funding rounds for the companies he’s involved with. Besides the South African start-up world, Bas is involved with a number of European early stage ventures and with a handful of conservation initiatives across the African continent. 

Bas currently lives in Cape Town with his wife and kids.  



Neil Watson

Frederik Gerner

Frederik is Dutch, born in Denmark and during his childhood lived twice in the USA but mainly grew up in The Netherlands.

After finishing his Masters of Science in Offshore Engineering in 2006 he co-founded Ampelmann (www.ampelmann.nl), a high tech service provider in the offshore energy industry. In 2013, having grown the company successfully autonomously he and his co-founders decided to sell the majority of the company to a financial investor. Shortly after Frederik moved to Singapore to set-up a regional head office and in 2017 he decided to leave the company he founded for his next adventure.

After finishing his EMBA at INSEAD in Singapore end of 2017 he moved to Cape Town with his wife and children. He now spends half of his time on his newly started VC fund for high tech hardware in the Netherlands and the other half on working on several projects including E4E Africa.
